Lords adjourned as redistribution bill stirs crisis
In the House of Lords Lord Salisbury urged postponing until Tuesday next to allow liberals and conservatives to reach statements on the redistribution of seats. The issue split the chambers, with the bill approved 224 to 56 after debate about whether it would hamper emergency measures. In Commons Mr Labouchere questioned Conservative assurances, and Mr Gladstone promised publicity if any secret understanding existed. Proceedings adjourned to Tuesday.

In Farmersville Louisiana Perry and William Milton were hanged for the Cherry murder. The brothers attacked Cherry after jealousy over his wealth and status, killing him and injuring his wife. They fled to Texas before capture. In New Orleans Charles Campbell was hanged for the 1884 murder of Theo Tueyenich. In Cincinnati George Schneider, who murdered his mother in October, was hanged after a prior confession.
