A 17 year old Minneapolis driver Stephen Walter Liszewski is in critical condition at the Kansas University Medical Center with severe head injuries from a one car Turnpike crash near the East Lawrence Interchange. He suffered compound fractures of the right leg and was transferred to the Medical Center after initial treatment at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. His 1959 convertible was a total loss.

Arkansas River flood threatens Garden City Kansas
The Arkansas River swelled to three miles wide isolating Lakin and flooding Garden City. Sheriff Ernest Craig Jr. and Trooper Neal Rathburn were rescued after being trapped on Kansas 25. Downtown areas faced sewage backflow as water rose to 15 feet, five feet above flood stage, with a projected crest six feet over bankfull. One Person Injured In Pair Of Road Mishaps
At about 8 p.m. Friday 24 miles west of Lawrence on U.S. 40 a sequence of crashes left Claude R. Smith 48 of Lecompton with minor injuries after his car left the road hit a bridge and struck a telephone pole. While helping others Elgin Woody 77 of 646 Ark St stopped and was hit when Maurine Roy 58 of 1620 R I St collided with the second vehicle. Three cars sustained about $900 in damage.
