New Devices for Locating Planes Across The Atlantic Warfront
Washington reports the United States leads in aircraft detection gear and plans to aid Britain by contributing volunteers to its radiolocator program. U S devices detect hostile aircraft beyond 100 miles, with 15 minutes warning, and are in large scale production for fixed and mobile stations. Congress earmarked 6.93 million for coast to coast detectors and five mobile signal corps units, with detectors costing 54 700 dollars each. The first mobile station is already in operation in anti aircraft war games near New York.

Originator of British radio locator system named
The article credits Cyril F. Elwell, a former Stanford engineer, as the originator of Britain's radio locator system used to warn of approaching Nazi air raids. It notes the system blends radio and other devices, with 237 foot towers along the English coast and a curtain of waves that planes pass through before crossing the Channel.

radar tracing planes through energy curtains in England
The text explains how radio energy reflects from passing aircraft to detectors at towers. Delicate instruments capture any reflected wave, revealing a plane’s presence as it passes through a curtain. Elwell traveled to England in 1936 and 1937 related to construction work.
