Beans priced to deter plowing? Farmers rethink acreage
In March the government forecast plantings of 9,788,000 acres of beans vs 10,528,000 last year, with Chicago beans near $1. The price rose sharply by late spring, shifting producers away from hay and toward beans. A year earlier the price hovered 76–80 cents, leading to extensive plowing under. As a result, only 4,961,000 acres were left to harvest 179,837,000 bushels, a large yield but tied to market changes.
