Empress Dowager Nagako of Japan Dies at 97
Empress Dowager Nagako, widow of Emperor Hirohito, died Friday at age 97 after breathing difficulties and a coma. Married in 1924, they had seven children as Hirohito reigned from 1926 through major wartime actions and Japan's postwar rise. Nagako had not appeared publicly for years, last attending Hirohito’s 86th birthday in 1987. She became the longest-living empress dowager at 92 in 1995.
