County budget increases eyed by Douglas County
Douglas County commissioners reviewed preliminary budget proposals from three county departments and the Bert Nash Center. Ambulance Service head Ted McFarlane proposed a 959 903 budget, a near 20 percent rise, including 26 000 for a Baldwin Rescue ambulance and plans for new stations and upgraded EMS. Other departments showed modest rises and a center hoped to cover gaps with state funds and higher fees. Public hearings set for August with final figures by Aug 25. Also reported Tuesday a burglary at a KU professor’s home yielded about 5 000 in antique silver and turquoise jewelry, with no suspects. Two Kansas City Kansas men were jailed for alleged armed hitchhiker robberies on the Kansas Turnpike near Linwood, each held on 10 000 bail.
