Lawrence Outdoor Aquatic Center at 727 Ky will reopen by 1 p.m. after a failed pump shut it through the morning. Crews will install a repaired pump and morning swimming lessons are canceled. The Indoor Aquatic Center at 4706 Overland Drive remains open as scheduled.
Pulitzer Prize winner Leonard Pitts Jr spoke at Liberty Memorial Central Middle School in Lawrence urging men to embrace roles as sons fathers and grandfathers. The talk drew more than 100 attendees including Edora resident Marcellus Jones and was part of Dads of Douglas County Dad Days events.
KU turned readers into fans as Jones, Paul Stevens, and Annie Stevens attended a columnist talk. Pitts used wit to explain the difference between being a man and a father, sharing life stories to illustrate his points.

Lawrence officials will hear a proposal to add Olive Garden to South Iowa Street development with a tax incentive plan. The Public Incentives Review Committee will assess using higher property tax shares to fund the private project near 27th and Iowa, a move city leaders see as essential to the northeast corner site. Mayor Aron Cromwell noted the proposal at Tuesday’s meeting as commissioners weigh public incentives for the project.
