Plot to aid al Qaeda and material support charges against Abdi
Investigators say Abdi plotted to provide support to terrorists and commit document fraud with possible 80 year prison exposure if convicted on all counts. He immigrated in 1999, falsified asylum claims, trained at an Ogaden camp in 1999 or 2000, and returned to the United States where Faris met him. Federal officials warn of potential al Qaida strikes, including a planned attack on a Columbus area mall, prompting mall security reviews and ongoing law enforcement collaboration. Abdi ran a small cell phone business in Columbus and was arrested November 28. his wife says he is innocent and targeted because of his faith.
