Lawrence district finance committee recommends a 1 mill tax increase to raise about 368000 annually for capital outlays. Board votes June 26 to adopt the levy, aiming to protect district department budgets and fund repairs to band and orchestra instruments with new money.
Lawrence city commissioners approved higher daily pool fees, doubled stormwater charges, and steeper speeding fines during a budget study session. Mayor Hodges noted the moves fund new facilities and federal compliance, with property valuations rising toward 550 million. The plan, part of the 2001 budget, awaits public comment.
The Southern Baptist Convention approved a Faith and Message revision declaring the pastorate reserved for men. Delegates warned congregations may split as about 100 pastor-led clergywomen face uncertain futures, and some churches already planned exits. Former Army Reserve colonel George Trofimoff, 73, faces espionage charges for a 25 year leak of military secrets to the Soviets while stationed in West Germany. He was arrested in Tampa after meeting an FBI agent posing as a Russian contact. prosecutors say he received $250,000, a bravery award, and operated from the Nuremberg Joint Interrogation Center through 1994. He is held without bail. his wife denies involvement.
