Baptists aim urban reach beyond past era
The Southern Baptists open their annual convention in Atlanta with plans led by President Paige Patterson to form multiethnic urban congregations from Boston to Seattle. The shift aims at growth over reconciliation, as critics note the denomination’s white rural origins and modest black membership in its 2,800 urban churches. Patterson is expected to be re-elected without opposition as moderates protest by staying home. Attendance likely under 14,000.
