Tornado memories still vivid in Lawrence 1981 disaster
Ten years after a June 19 1981 Lawrence tornado one man died 33 injured with about 18 million dollars in damage. Volunteer spotter Phil Rankin helped sound alerts as the storm tore through 27th to 31st streets demolishing a Kmart and damaging homes. Stan Pittman KU computer assistant was killed inside the store. Rankin credits brief warning time and notes how the event reshaped local lives. See Memories, page 13A.
