Congress approves rewritten military aid measure after veto

Congress approves revised military aid legislation with new export restrictions. The Senate passes a 6.7 billion dollar version and the House a 7 billion dollar authorization, both aiming to curb weapons exports while meeting presidential concerns. The conference seeks a bill Ford will sign amid efforts to broaden congressional control over exports. The Senate also provisions to cut off all military aid to Chile.

Cavalry group pitches Kansas expansion in Philadelphia

Lawrence business volunteers of the Kansas Cavalry travelled to Philadelphia hosting a luncheon with 60 members and 70 Pennsylvania executives. They touted Kansas growth prospects and showed Crossroads U.S.A. to gauge firm interest while noting potential expansion talks with three to four mid Atlantic firms.

Cattle importer freed after Rome kidnapping raid

Police rescued Giuseppe D'Ambrosio, 53, kidnapped by a group calling itself the Fighting Communist Unit. The abductors demanded a revolutionary sale of 71 tons of meat at reduced prices and fled as officers secured the empty government building near the Colosseum. The incident follows tensions ahead of Italy's national election.

House votes to hike national debt ceiling

The House approved a 184 to 177 vote to raise the national debt limit to 700 billion dollars in three stages by September 30, 1977, with the current 627 billion cap expiring June 30. The bill advances to the Senate amid limited debate and opposition from Rep. Ketchum.

Lawrence school board moves to acquire Clinton Lake nature area

Lawrence District 497 approves a 233 acre agreement with the Army Corps of Engineers to secure Clinton Lake land as a nature study area. The district will maintain the property for 10 years at no cost and may add a rock road in year one. Six trustees vote yes with one abstention. the license allows student led nature study sites. Maintenance, cafeteria, and custodial staff receive a 7.3 percent raise for 1976-77.

Lawrence District Names New Director of Secondary Education

William L. Wilson, formerly Russell district director of curriculum and personnel, is hired as Lawrence director of secondary education and personnel. The board approved a 20500 dollar annual salary and a relocation allowance up to 500 dollars.

Teachers Hunt Votes on 1976 77 Contract in Lawrence

Lawrence Education Association members seek enough votes to ratify a tentative master contract for the 1976 77 school year. With 199 yes votes so far, 20 short of a majority, volunteers will phone teachers ahead of a board meeting set for Wednesday morning. The agreement boosts base pay from 7400 to 8100 and elevates elementary PE teachers to full teacher status. Linwood gains a new principal as William Chambers takes over Aug 1.

Defense budget urged to rise to curb Soviet threat

The National Strategy Information Center warns the Ford administration’s defense budget is insufficient to deter a Soviet strategic edge. It cites Russian spending around 130 billion yearly, calls for a 10 percent annual rise for three years then 5 percent for seven, and blames past budget cuts and inflation.
