The German high command announced the fall of Verdun and Fort Vaux and Fort Marre as part of a broad front drive south of Saarbrucken. Luftwaffe bombed Maginot forts while Paris braced for possible German administration.
President Roosevelt pledged to redouble U S arms shipments to France and Britain as long as allied governments resist the axis threat he told Premier Reynaud. He stressed no military commitment and said only Congress can authorize such actions while promising continued material support and defense of France’s territorial integrity.
Washington reports that President Vargas of Brazil assured President Roosevelt the June 11 speech did not contradict Roosevelt’s Charlottesville address. Senate Finance Committee unanimously approved a 1 007 600 000 emergency tax bill funding a 5 billion defense program over five years with amendments.
Secretary Hull disclosed that the government was investigating reports about Italian consular officials in the United States. He noted the Italian ambassador’s objection to claims of pro Fascist activity and said the facts would reveal any truth to the reports.
President Roosevelt signed legislation opening federal arsenals and U S shipyards to Latin American Republics for construction and purchase of naval vessels and war material. Transactions must be on a cash basis.

In Washington on June 15 the British and French ambassadors and President Roosevelt signaled no firm decision on expanding U S war aid. A citizens military training camp plan would educate 3 000 business and professional men to boost preparedness.
The air ministry reported RAF heavy bombers attacked military targets in the Ruhr Rhineland and Baden in southwest Germany, supporting Allied forces. Bombers hit Merville airfield near Neuve Chapelle. several aircraft are missing or late returning. Coastal Command destroyed ammo on Bergen quay.
London declares that allies continue in close consultation and complete agreement. British statement counters German and Italian propaganda claiming discord between British and French civil and military authorities.
Kansas bankers gathered at the Union building for the second annual Kansas Bankers Clinic sponsored by the Kansas Bankers association bank management commission the Kansas State Banking department and the University extension division. About 250 bank representatives left Lawrence after sessions and two more meetings open Tuesday: a Kansas schools education program conference expected to draw nearly 500 educators and a four day course in fire casualty and surety insurance with insurance agents registering at 3 pm. The executive meeting of the Kansas Association of Insurance Agents opens at 3 30 pm and the opening dinner at 7 pm in the Union building. Full sessions run Wednesday through Friday in Marvin hall. Gene Glahn heads local arrangements and Henry J Weltmer Jr leads the educational committee.
A full time deputy sheriff, Harry Gregg, began duty at Lone Star lake to enforce the county commissioners ruling against fishing and trespassing. Sheriff Charles Banning said Gregg was chosen to patrol, with a boat provided for lake rounds. John Stevens expects surrounding road work to finish by July 1 with one mile of shore still roadless.

Enrollment at the University for the 38th summer session rose to about 1,265 by 11 am with more than last year’s totals. Officials expect Kansas City medicine enrollment to push the combined total above 1,300. The week’s schedule includes a recreational program led by Dr. F C Allen with open playgrounds in Fowler Grove and an opening picnic on Wednesday.
French communique reports no change in Normandy or south of Paris. Enemy forces cross the Seine near Romilly, press toward Troyes and St Dizier, pushing advance guards toward Chaumont. In Alsace they attack Neufbrisach. a few detachments cross the Rhine but do not break French resistance.
Lawrence Penner will be awarded his PhD from the University of Minnesota this evening. He majored in zoology with entomology as a minor and has been elected to Sigma Xi. He received grants to study parasitology at Harvard and will depart next month. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Penner of this city and earned A B and M A degrees from the University of Kansas. Mrs. Penner is Imogene Beamer, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. R. H. Beamer of Lawrence.
Finland today paid the annual war debt installment of 159 398 dollars and shortly after President Roosevelt signed a 10-year moratorium on payments. Finnish minister Hjalmer J Procope presented the check to Herbert E Gaston as a sign of gratitude. Romania also made a conditional June payment of 100 000 dollars on its debt installment of 1 386 870, awaiting a broader settlement.
A four day conference on improving Kansas school instruction begins Tuesday at the University of Kansas Fraser theater. Chancellor Deane W. Malott will give the opening address and Dean R. A. Schwegler will preside. Dr. Walter E. Myer of Washington D C will speak on the international situation Tuesday night. Lawrence participants include Richard B. Stevens Walter Keeler Mrs J J Kistler Deal Six county farms agent George Docking J W Murray and H L Chambers.
The Conte Biancamano, refuge in Balboa after Italy entered the war, faces an admiralty suit by Asiatic Petroleum for 91848 dollars unpaid fuel oil. Canal Zone marshal acts in the case with Asaitec Petroleum’s Clifford Payne as agent. The 25000-ton liner is no longer allowed to depart the Zone waters without authorization.
Soviet forces entered Kaunas and advanced into Lithuania after the Kremlin declared terms accepted. Lithuania, under pressure, announced it would form a new government and cooperate with Moscow while alleging Lithuanian provocation. The Tass communique blamed Lithuanian authorities for attacks on Soviet garrisons and outlined three stipulations.
A campaign to fill Companies H and M of the 137th Infantry to full strength began today. Each company needs 15 to 20 men as vacancies arise from schooling, new jobs, or transfers. Recruits may train at Camp Ripley Minnesota from August 4 to 24 with pay and uniforms provided.
Sunday will bring fair weather with little temperature change and no expected thunder showers until late week. Kansas remains dry overall with no rain in the past 24 hours, temperatures rising into the 90s, and wheat harvest aided by the sunshine from Robb forecasts.
Professor Earl D. Hay supervisor of the Kansas University flying program says air training is being pushed for part of the 60 students in the summer course. Additional applicants were sent to Dr. Lyle Powell for physical examinations this morning. The contract from the CAA is on its way and once signed by the Chancellor and insurance policies are issued, flight training can begin.

Next week should stay generally fair with scattered thunderstorms later in the week, precipitation below normal and temperatures above normal.
