Lens Lets Him See Wife After Eighteen Years Of Blindness
San Francisco AP Robert Bitts regained sight after 17 years when a plastic lens was implanted June 4 at Mt. Zion Hospital. He met his wife Martha and their six month old son Ruben the day after surgery and described the moment as a life changing experience. Bitts, 39, taught math at Arapahoe Community College and was blinded in 1956 by sulfur dioxide exposure while repairing a refrigerator. He previously studied engineering at Stanford and learned to form mental images of people while blind. The lens, an experimental prosthetic, let him read the surgeon’s card and confirm success.
