Twining and aides to tour Soviet airpower display

General Nathan Twining and nine Air Force officers will travel to the Soviet Union on June 23 to observe a jet air force flyover and assess what the Russians show. The visit could influence any future exchanges, depending on Moscow's program and access.

Summer Start Sparks Big Attendance at Lawrence Playgrounds

Lawrence Recreation Commission reports a fast start for the summer playground program with attendance near doubling last year if current trends hold. About 1,000 Lawrence youngsters are eligible to participate across seven city parks with total 13,994 attendees last year and 2,995 in the first three parks this season.

Seven Republican candidates formally filed today in the county clerk office. They include Wayne Allphin for assessor new D E Mathia for clerk Mrs Edythe Norman for treasurer Charley Edmondson for sheriff Mrs Emma Berg for superintendent of schools Mrs Lurille Allison for clerk of the court and Harald Beck for registrar. Incumbents AML hur Edegeayde Son and present undersheriff also seek renomination. Lawrence elementary school concert band and orchestra schedule a Friday evening performance at 7 43 p m in South Park directed by Wilbur M West. Traffic wrecks cause $7500 damage on Lawrence streets

Two crashes Wednesday on Lawrence streets caused $7500 in damage with no injuries. Involved were Dorothy H. Midgett and Richard Marquette at 21st and Carolina Streets with $400 damage. John Walker Tendon and Doris Marie Herbage at 10th and N J Streets caused $350 in damage.

K U Faculty Man On Award List by Ford

George M Beckmann KU history assistant professor is named among 13 Ford Foundation fellowships for foreign affairs study. He will take a six month fellowship to study current conditions in Japan and Southeast Asia, part of a program boosting U S international responsibilities. Fellowships cover Asia Near East Africa the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Beckmann will study in Japan.

Charles Pine Dies In Topeka Hospital

Charles Pine 75 longtime Lawrence figure died in Topeka State Hospital. He once ran the old Lawrence House Hotel and later two Massachusetts Street eateries. Funeral will be Friday at 2 pm at Rumsey Funeral Home with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. He is survived by a sister Ina Pine of Los Angeles and a brother Jim Pine of Paramount California. Pine was known for charitable gifts and helping motorists with parking penalties.

Haskell Youth Involved In Bridge Abutment Crash

Bobby James, 22, of Haskell sustained minor facial and neck injuries when his car skidded off a township road 344 miles south of Lawrence and struck a bridge abutment after turning off U S Highway 59. He was treated as an outpatient at Haskell Institute Hospital. Vehicle damage was about $200. Sheriff and Highway Patrol investigated.

Firemen Respond to Three Minor Blazes This Morning

The Fire Department made three runs today to minor fires at the Dallas Davis residence 129 West South Park grease on the stove, at Travis Class residence 547 Alabama Street a washing machine motor fire, and at the city dump 10:04 a.m. In police court Chester Allen Route 3 was fined $100 and jailed 30 days for DUI.

Funeral services for Ed Anderson in Colorado Springs

Funeral services for Ed Anderson, 91, former Lawrence resident who died Monday in Colorado Springs will be held at 10 30 a m Friday at Funk Cooper Warren chapel with the casket closed. The family will be at the chapel from 8 to 9 p m today. Pallbearers are R W Sanders Charles Banning Robert Oyler Joe Schelbar Lathrop G Read Jr and Travis Glass. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Dr Smith resigns KU geology post for Massachusetts University

Dr H T U Smith associate professor of geology will resign his Kansas University position to head the Department of Geology at Massachusetts University starting next September. He has served 20 years at KU writing three books and seven papers and is a fellow of the Geological Society of America.
