Local wartime report notes only limited fighting in the past twenty four hours as Allied troops hold the line and repel German blows. No major offensives reported, with both sides trading brief engagements along designated fronts.
Allied reports say German attacks around Montdidier Soissons and near Morris in Flanders have been forced to equilibrium after heavy bombardment. French and British lines show no major infantry breakthroughs. a renewed German push toward Amiens or channel ports is possible.
Messages of congratulations on General Pershing's arrival anniversary in France were released by General March chief of staff. The notes came from President Poincare Premier Clemenceau General Foch and General Petain to the American commander in chief.
American aviators clashed with German fighters on the Toul front and Norroy area. Two Germans were shot down and one crippled, with one American plane missing as pilots pursued across 2000 to 5000 meters. The battle involved 12 German machines and three Americans.

President A A Hicks and Chamber of Commerce secretary H A Sparks will keep operations alive during harvest, but post harvest work may end. Despite efforts to obtain deferred status, no suitable replacements are available as federal authorities audit the books in Lawrence. Moore has married and is living in Winchester. the bureau anticipates no farm agent and a possible closure after harvest.
Douglas County citizens pledge drive shows about ten percent unpaid with mostly small 25 and 50 cent amounts. Secretary H W Boltz notes large subscriptions paid in full and only one $25 pledge outstanding. National drive exceeded goal by 53 million, enough to cover expenses until 1918, delaying next drive until October. most townships met quotas.
Miss Naomi Light leaves for Bryn Mawr Pa to pursue a graduate department course in social economy and research funded by a University of Kansas scholarship. She earned the A B degree from K A and held the English fellowship in 191A. The War emergency program combines limited lectures with extensive field work in manufacturing plants in New England and Philadelphia.
San Antonio reports Royal Air Force officer Pat OBrien, recently escaped from a German prison, fell about 2000 feet in an airplane near Kelly Field. He was alone, sustained cuts and bruises, and was taken to the emergency hospital. He remained conscious and worried his trousers were ruined.

Potters Lake will be developed into a bathing resort for Summer Session students with clear water and a sand beach. Plans by the department of physics education, directed by W. O. Hamilton, include a piano for fall dancing and evening recreation hours from 7 30 to 8 40 with volleyball and baseball under Hamilton and Miss Pratt.
Registrants who are parents or have married since May 19 1917 face deferred classification in Class 1 as of June 5 1918 under an order from Provost Marshal General Crowder via Adjutant General Huffman. Those with children exemptions go to Class 2 C. Kansas cities like Lyons expect to gain thousands of Class 1 men.
George C. Taylor former president of the American Company is chosen to head the American Railroad Express Company. He will guide a new arrangement to unite the Adams, American, Southern, and Wells Fargo express firms and possibly others.
Major J H Dunkel announces Lawrence and Douglas County will recruit for two new National Guard regiments. Local state guard units will merge into the Fifth Regiment with officers and exams to fill vacancies, allowing enlistment from ages 18 to 45 and potential transfer to regular services.
Washington reports a casualty list totaling 181 names across Army and Marine Corps with 61 killed in action and 48 severely wounded. Kansans mentioned include Thomas from Garden City and Clarence from LaCygne among others. Maj. Benj. S. Berry and Capt Oscar R. Caldy are noted as severely wounded.
