Depot windfall could fund Lawrence Santa Fe depot makeover
A $1.5 million federal grant will fund about 80 percent of the plan to take city ownership of the Santa Fe Railway depot in East Lawrence. The project would replace the roof and HVAC, repair masonry and sidewalks, and improve parking. The city must finalize a takeover from BNSF and decide who bears environmental and ongoing maintenance costs with Amtrak retaining some office space in the building. Residents are urged to suggest uses for the revived site near the new Cider Gallery.
