Eldridge Hotel Faces Auction Over Back Taxes
Tax officials pressed delinquent payments at the Eldridge Hotel after a partial payment by the hotel owner failed to clear 2000 real estate taxes totaling 77,510 due before the 2004 county tax auction. Douglas County Treasurer Pat Wells warned of an auction date yet to be set, with possible closure if unpaid. The hotel's business has fallen about 30 percent since a competing SpringHill Suites opened downtown in 2001.

Eldridge Hotel history and parking dispute in Lawrence
The Eldridge Hotel in downtown Lawrence traces back to 1855 as the Free State Hotel, rebuilt after attacks by Quantrill and pro-slavery forces. In 1970 it closed as a hotel and became apartments, then a revival effort in 1985 sought city aid for parking lot access. Officials discuss exclusive guest parking amid debt collection and ongoing talks with investors and lawyers.
