Riots and Shootings Rock Georgetown as Strike Roils Guiana
Looting mobs roamed Georgetown while six people were shot as bodyguards fired into a threatening crowd. Two others fell during clashes with police amid an eight week strike against a government labor bill that foes say would empower a Castro style dictatorship. The bill would let the government decide which unions employers recognize. Prime Minister Jagan, 45, says the strike aims to topple him and cites long standing ethnic tensions in the colony. East Indians and Negroes divide a population of about 600,000 with East Indians prominent in education and politics, and Negroes dominant in Georgetown itself.
