Tiny Bolt Seen As Possible Cause Of Air Disaster
FAA says a mechanic may have neglected a cutter pin allowing a bolt to loosen in a rudder mechanism on the March 1 American Airlines Boeing 707 crash into Jamaica Bay killing 95. The agency alerted airlines and the Military Air Transport Service, warning that such an installation error could cause a similar tragedy. The Civil Aeronautics Board continues the investigation and will determine the probable cause.
