County Board Sticks to Law on Bank Taxation in Douglas County
The Douglas county board decided to assess banks at the full ad valorem rate and the state rate for intangibles, rejecting a 60 percent tax-levy plan. They argued the 60 percent approach lacks legal sanction and could harm county revenues, sending the issue to the state tax commission for possible equalization. The decision aims to avoid disturbances to valuations and preserve gasoline tax allocations while acknowledging banks should pay more than the intangible rate. The state banks tax case is pending before the supreme court with a decision expected at the court's next session.
