Heartland seeks Douglas County funding for new Bluestem building
Heartland Community Health Center plans to ask Douglas County for 1.5 million to cover remaining costs for the Bluestem Wellness Building, an 8000 square foot expansion housing psychiatry and behavioral health services. The request will be considered in the 2025 budget process, with construction near completion and opening slated for October 1.

Rape trial opens for ex Illinois basketball star Terence Shannon
Douglas County jurors hear opening statements and testimony from the alleged victim in the trial of Terence Shannon a former Illinois basketball star charged with rape or aggravated sexual abuse. The 23 year old from Champaign is accused of assaulting a woman Sept 9 2023 at Jayhawk Cafe during a Kansas visit for a KU Illinois football game. The woman testified she met Shannon at the bar late that night after attending the same game and had only a few sips of vodka.
