House blocks extended jobless benefits in narrow vote
The House defeated a Democratic bid to extend unemployment benefits by 13 weeks for all Americans, risking a veto from the White House. The measure would have raised average checks from 300 dollars a week to 13 extra weeks, with higher unemployment states favored. Final tally 279 to 144, three votes short of passage. Kansas Democrats Moore and Boyda backed the bill while Republicans Moran and Tiahrt opposed it. Senate Democrats may refile within a must-pass war-spending bill.
