Suspected al-Qaida bombers stepped up attacks on key transportation arteries, striking a bridge north of Baghdad on Monday a day after blowing up the superhighway south of the capital. The blast collapsed an overpass and killed three U.S. soldiers. The Associated Press reported from Baghdad.
The AP tally shows at least 3,510 U.S. military deaths since March 2003 amid a campaign of truck bombings that damaged bridges and disrupted traffic through Diyala and Baghdad. Insurgents also target oil, power, and transport links as Iraqi politics shift with the ouster of speaker Mahmoud al Mashhadani and Britain’s Gordon Brown engaging with Iraqi leaders.
Muqtada al Sadr reemerges from three months out of sight and replaces local leaders of his movement including in Baghdad, denying further Mahdi Army violence. Aide Salah al Obaidi says Sadr rejects violence while noting factional splits and ongoing power struggles in Tehran backed and U.S. influenced Baghdad politics. Local leaders in Bayaa and Amil are said to have acted without Sadr orders amid a broader push to shape a Sunni-Shiite coalition against continued U.S. presence.
