County jail set to open in August near Lawrence
Sheriff Loren Anderson says moving inmates to the new Douglas County Jail off Kansas Highway 10 east of Lawrence should begin in August. The $21.8 million, 196-bed facility missed several May targets but remains on track, with construction never cutting corners and workmanship maintained since groundbreaking in September 1997.

Douglas County to hire 35 more jail officers for new facility
The Douglas County Sheriff's Department plans adding 35 corrections officers to staff the new jail, with about 10 positions still open. Training occurs at both jails, and some officers may become commissioned deputies. Officials aim for half to be commissioned, while delays affect only operational readiness, not costs. The county already pays to house inmates elsewhere, and the target date for full security readiness is mid summer, with inmates unlikely before August.
