Morgenthau urges higher taxes for defense funding
Secretary Morgenthau told the Senate Finance Committee that a $1.004 billion tax bill is needed to help finance a five billion dollar defense program. He proposed taxing new federal securities and using existing authority to tax defense bonds, while cautioning against premature cuts to relief or essential public services. He noted the bill aims to increase revenue and cut nondefense spending as part of mobilizing national defenses.
