CHS reserve action cited amid wartime reporting. Berlin dispatch notes decisive stance and looming ne victory claims, with emphasis on morale and strategic posture. Officials cite new measures and continued vigilance as tensions rise.
London reports indicate German forces are compelled to deploy reserves as both sides clash along a broad front. Allied resistance blocks Ludendorff plans, with fighting centered near Montdidier, Compiègne, and the Aisne sector. American artillery supports French counterattacks while prisoners and territorial gains mark the day, as the battle enters a critical phase.
A hostile aircraft with French markings bombed and fired on American soldiers who fought back without casualties. Reports note Germans have lately used French signs on planes. In another action, British raids repelled near Aveluywood and Voyers, with prisoners taken. Twenty one enemy aircraft were destroyed on the Italian front by British air forces.
Washington reports the Prussian war minister told the Reichstag the so called Foch reserve army no longer exists. Wichita Kansas June 12 Kansas eating houses urged by Federal Food Administrator Walter P Innes to curb sugar waste in iced tea by serving envelopes with not more than two teaspoons of sugar and removing sugar bowls. Tea remains lawful. aim is conservation for canning needs and allies.
A $12 000 oil by George Inness greets visitors on the third floor admin building displaying the Thayer Collections at the University of Kansas. The exhibit runs daily from 8 a m to 12 20 p m with works by Miller, Carlsen, Homer, Murphy, and Israels among others. The Thayer gift totals over $170 000 from Mrs Thayer of Emery Bird Thayer Co Kansas City. Not all works fit in the room but more will be shown as space allows including Japanese sword and oriental wares.
Yesterday 138 swimmers enjoyed the Y M C A pool with more expected. The girls class had 88 in the beginner and 21 in the older class, while 34 began in the boys class and 50 high school boys and young men swam. W H Boltz, Y M C A secretary, says evening classes for working women are impracticable due to facilities. mornings offer full use of equipment with no separate dressing rooms.
Club and city groups organize a Flag Day observance in Lawrence featuring Judge C A Smart as principal speaker on patriotism. The Haskell Indian band will provide music with a flag drill by Cordley school children and remarks by Mayor Geo L Kreeck and Major J H Dunkel.
A horse run runaway near Haskell late last night was captured by police and is held unclaimed at Monk's livery barn. The buggy and harness were damaged and portions of the harness are missing. Witnesses could not identify the owner, and authorities are seeking to locate the owner.
The Chamber of Commerce will meet tomorrow at noon to discuss Independence Day observance. A patriotic program is planned with no fireworks or explosives, and a committee will coordinate with other groups. General Wil der S. Metcalf, recently discharged from the National Army and now a state senator, will be the chief speaker.
Seventeen graduates, most of them women, received diplomas today at Haskell Institute after a five day commencement program. The ceremony featured an address by H J Waters, with athletic events, a Lawrence night production of Hiawatha, Indian music by the Haskell orchestra, and department exhibits in the gymnasium.
Numerous payments for the second half taxes arrive by mail this week. Receipts are prefilled and mailed immediately upon receipt of the payment by the county treasurer's office.

Word reached here today of the death of Mrs. Dora Herries wife of J P Herries at their Fresno home California cause of death diabetes Mr and Mrs Herries formerly lived in Lawrence Mr Herries worked in the Santa Fe telegraph office but about a dozen years ago the family left California Mrs Herries was daughter of the late Senator Matt Edrhands of this district and spent her early years at McLouth The funeral will be held there tomorrow.
Laura Jones was freed as the charge of violating the dry law was dismissed for lack of evidence in Judge J. W. Clark's court. The ruling ends the case with no conviction.
