Budget stalemate as lawmakers race to pass tax bills
Kansas House and Senate clash over a tax package aimed at closing a 360 million dollar gap and balancing the budget. As of early morning, the bill to balance the budget trailed 29 to 86 with roll calls paused to rally absent members. House leaders pressed forward with two tax bills to lift state revenues by about 408 million, including higher sales and cigarette taxes and a change to guaranteed payments. The hour nears 8 a.m. turnout as factions argue over policy changes added by the Senate and opposed by House members.

Election move extends officials' terms and elections
Lawrence residents will see longer terms for city commissioners and school board members after Gov. Brownback signed a law extending terms by roughly 10 months for officials and seven months for school boards. The March primary and April general elections in 2017 are canceled and replaced by an August primary and a November general election.
