Early Tuesday fires erupted at ExxonMobil Chalmette and Murphy Oil refineries, about 1.5 miles apart. Officials say the incidents were accidental and unrelated with no major injuries. ExxonMobil cited a pump failure while Murphy cited a crude oil to heavy fuel breakdown system as the ignition source.
The weekend storm churned the Florida Panhandle surf raising the drowning toll to nine with two hospital deaths on Tuesday and a Sunday fatality not initially disclosed. Two swimmers remained hospitalized one on life support and another in fair condition as red flags warned bathers to stay out of the water.
