Children Escape Fire In Local House Blaze

Fire department estimated $15,000 damage to the house and $5,000 to contents with damage confined to the first floor and heat and smoke on upper levels. The Walkers expect partial insurance coverage. Investigators suspect electrical wiring in the kitchen as a possible cause but no definite determination has been made.

Congress nears action on Carter water project cuts

Both chambers move toward excluding funds for 18 dams and other water projects in a $10 billion public works package. A Senate subcommittee meets today after a prior stalemate as House leaders plan floor action Monday, with debates over restoring trimmed amounts and preserving safety standards. In a separate report, a Kansas Grove Lake deletion is noted. crime report follows on a burglary in the 1200 block of Oread with $2,500 missing and items valued at $1,000 to $400.

Douglas County approves 180 foot tower contract with Motorola

The Douglas County Commission signed a 63 602 contract with Motorola Inc to install a 180 foot downtown Lawr ence tower. About 14 000 covers the tower while the rest funds civil defense radio gear for the county courthouse area. The tower serves as a backup communications link and must be installed within five months with completion of the entire package by late summer.

Court lets youths buy nonprescription contraceptives

The Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that states may not bar sales of contraceptives to minors and cannot require adults to buy them or restrict display. Lawrence district to receive 85000 grant for struggling high schoolers

Lawrence District 497 will use an 85000 HEW grant to fund four full time staff screening ninth graders for special help, training teachers to modify instruction, and guiding students with coping skills to stay with the regular curriculum despite learning disabilities. Acting secretary named for aging department

Gov. Bennett named William E. Richards acting secretary of Kansas new Department of Aging. Richards, 55, a retired Army officer, leads the division of social services in SRS and will coordinate the department’s establishment during a transition period. Bennett will appoint members to the Advisory Council on Aging.
