Girls State selects officers and prepares for Nationals

In Topeka the Girls State convention proceeds with sessions at the state Capitol as 400 plus seniors study city county and state government. Three girls will be chosen Saturday to attend Girls Nation in Washington and Philadelphia while Boys and Girls Nation join this year.

City Commissioner to Meet Public Tonight in Conference Room

City Commissioner Carl Mibeck will discuss city affairs with the public from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. tonight. The session is part of a rotating series involving all five commissioners, held in the Conference Room on the fourth floor of the First National Bank tower.

Schneider urges public involvement to lift political standards

Sheriff plane crash near Topeka injures five

A Shawnee County sheriff plane carrying three prisoners and two deputies crashed ten miles south of Topeka while en route to the state reformatory. Police helicopter reported no movement from those aboard as ambulances rushed to the rural site. Osage County said fatalities were unlikely.

Ling suit sets motions deadline in demolition clash

Daniel S. Ling of Rt. 1 seeks to block Lawrence city action to demolish his unoccupied 1301 Ohio property. Deadline for motions is Aug 1 with 25 days for responses. Wellsville council approves added fire phones

Wellsville city council votes to add five fire phones bringing the total to 15 and placed in volunteer firefighters homes. The meeting also approves Easy Skidmore construction requests and paves the alley between Main and Elm Streets to support traffic flow.

Filing deadline nears as candidates line up for August primary

With barely 10 days to file for public office, 18 candidates seek 13 county and state jobs in the August primary. Only two offices lack candidates, Douglas County Probate Judge and Clerk of the District Court, while incumbents like Judge Mike Elwell and Clerk Sherlyn Sampson have not declared plans. Several races feature unopposed candidates and a few contesting seats including sheriff, treasurer, and second district county commission.

Kansas Wheat Crop Forecast Hits 1968 Low

The Crop and Livestock Reporting Service forecasts 179.50 million bushels of wheat for Kansas with 10.75 million acres to harvest at 26 bushels per acre. A May 3 freeze and disease cut yield and acreage, leaving a shortfall of over 71 million bushels from 1975. Abandonment stands at 2.35 million acres, driven by drought and wind damage, while pasture conditions rise slightly to 86 percent of normal.

City agency to study socio economic factors of airport expansion

Citizens Advisory Council chair Jack Harris said the CAC will decide today how to handle a Lawrence City Commission request to study socio economic factors in possible airport expansion. The CAC transportation committee had declined the job, citing limited expertise and scope. A new, larger group or a committee of the whole may be formed to conduct the study to present balanced public findings.

Lawrence to dedicate Kaw River Trail and flag ceremony

Saturday events at Kansas Riverfront celebrate Lawrence Bicentennial with a four mile Kaw River Trail dedication led by local volunteers. Officials will unveil the official American Revolution Bicentennial Administration flag and announce the city songwriting contest winner who receives 150 dollars and a Prairie Chautauqua performance slot on July 24.
