Vanderbilt University confronted a widening dispute over race after professors resigned over the expulsion of James M. Lawson. Divinity School Dean J. Robert Nelson and 10 others allege Chancellor Harvie Branscomb offered to resign if terms were unmet. Reports said six medical faculty may resign, while Chicago Theological Seminary offered positions to Nelson and the ten.
More than seventy people from six states join the first annual Great Books conference on the Kansas University campus. The three day event runs through Sunday noon with Seymour Weinstein and James Hudson of the Great Books Foundation leading discussions. Studied works include The Scarlet Letter Leaves of Grass and The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. States represented include Kansas Missouri Connecticut. Sponsors are the Chicago foundation Wichita clubs Kansas City groups Lincoln Nebraska and the Conference and Institute division of Kansas University Extension.

He is being force fed via intravenous feeding as he refuses to eat or talk, with prison grapevine reports of minor food slipping from prisoner orderlies. Smith and Hickock await execution for the Clutter farm slayings near Holcomb.
Warren, co-owner of the Cooper-Warren Mortuary, had major back surgery Thursday at Kansas University Medical Center. His condition was described as good, with a slipped disc corrected after admission Tuesday and a release planned for early next week.

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS MO AP A 65 year old ex convict named William M Faler alias Cecil Floyd signed a statement admitting killing his 13 year old granddaughter JoAnn Wyse after 12 hours of questioning. He faces first degree murder charges with possible death penalty. JoAnn went missing 12 days earlier and her body was found in a field. Prosecutor says death may have followed a rape attempt. Faler is held for a preliminary hearing June 28.
The United States issued a second stern protest to Cuba accusing the Fidel Castro regime of baseless and offensive charges against the United States over the La Coubre explosion. Washington said the pamphlet reproducing Castro’s Havana speech widens the dispute amid U S. statements through the OAS.

Adam Kay a Lawrence pharmacist filed Thursday in Topeka as a Democrat candidate for state senator from the Fifth District covering Douglas and Jefferson counties. Earlier Milton P. Allen filed as a Republican candidate for the post. The seat is held by Republican Don S. Hults of Lawrence who seeks renomination.
Vernon California police say 27 year old warehouseman Joseph Gruber stole goods from his employer to help friends then gave away a truckload of toys to neighbors. Detectives describe a gradual shift from charity to crime as he used a company truck to haul televisions radios tools and more valued at 59000. He admitted the Robin Hood scheme and was booked on grand theft suspicions as officers retrieved loot from nearby homes.
Two rural burglaries were reported to the sheriff this morning. No houses were entered. Tools valued at about 40 dollars were taken from the Wesley Brune farm on Route 1. At the William Pendleton farm on Route 5 hay rope was taken. Recent months have seen multiple farm burglaries in Douglas County and neighboring counties.

Constant Construction Co of Lawrence was the apparent low bidder at 1450 dollars for replacing limestone steps into Kansas University's Watson Library and Snow Hall. Keith Lawton, KU physical plant director, said weathering has badly capped the surfaces creating hazards in wet and freezing weather. The surfaces will be replaced with concrete this summer.
Robert Fanster, 53 year old ex convict, was bound over for trial Thursday in the attempted slaying of Arthur Garney, 65, a plumbing contractor.

Jerry Smith, trained in architectural engineering at Kansas University 1954 and Marine Corps officer, earned a public administration master from KU city manager school this spring. He and wife Erma Lutz of Dodge City have two daughters and live at 1632 W 20th St. Terr. Smith follows Bob Kipp as a KU City Manager School graduate moved to a city manager post last year.
A panel led by Probate Judge E Newton Vickers ruled 15 year old Diane Roberts insane after she admitted poisoning her parents with bug poison in punch. The Olathe girl had been declared a juvenile delinquent and sent for a mental examination before a brief Topeka State Hospital hearing.
