At a roadside inn five miles southwest of Hiawatha Mrs. Harold Simons, 44, was killed and her husband, 46, seriously wounded when an assailant fired through a window shortly after midnight. Simons drove to town for help despite a shattered left arm. He could offer no motive or identity of the attacker. Local sheriff Rev. Schofield reported on the shooting and the injuries. The clamn in the number of job applicants at KSES office con tinued during the week ending June 7 as the total number of applicants dropped in 399 according to Manager Walter T. Johns. Johns said a total of 143 persons were referred to Lawrence employers she hired 64 men and 16 women. Washington June 10 The license expenditures committee voted to oppose President Truman's proposal to merge government activities in the permanent housing field. The panel backed rejecting the merger No 3 while the Senate Banking Committee scheduled new hearings next Tuesday. Syracuse Kansas June 10 John Leslie Kean 25 of Leoti was killed when his truck hit a bridge abutment on US 50 five miles west of here. Kean reportedly fell asleep at the wheel.
South Lawrence residents petitioned for a stop light at Twenty third and Massachusetts street. The safety engineer of the state highway commission may study conditions after input from residents and city officials. Highway officials questioned traffic volume and noted existing warnings. a survey was promised. Nearby Fifth and Florida streets also seek a light. the matter was referred to the street committee during a four hour meeting.
