The Republican National Convention begins in Convention Hall Cleveland with temporary Chairman Theodore EB Burton delivering the keynote. Delegates gather amid bands and lighting effects as sets are organized for the platform vote and future selections.
The Cleveland convention adjourned and the resolutions committee opened an open hearing to draft the platform. chair J Charles B Warren of Michigan and Ogden Mills of New York lead as proposals from labor and reform groups are debated, including taxation, alcohol, and anti Klan positions.
Partly cloudy conditions persist tonight with possible local thunder storms. The forecast notes warmer temperatures in the western and extreme northern portions, with yesterday's temperatures used as a reference point.
Paris June 10 Associated Press President Millerand informs the cabinet that he will resign. The resignation will be read before both houses tomorrow at 3 pm and a successor will be named within 48 hours at Versailles. The Francois-Marsal ministry was defeated in the chamber 329 to 214, seen as forcing Millerand from office. The chamber adjourned to 3 pm to hear the government communication and the presidential crisis continues.
June 10 Cleveland reports former Illinois Governor Frank C Lowden has sent a sealed letter to be read at the Republican national convention stating he will not accept the VP nomination under any circumstances. In Washington Borah of Idaho directs his name be withdrawn if offered and urges William S Kenyon as alternative with Coolidge backing.
National League highlights include St Louis 6, Boston 2 with Bell and teammates supplying hits. Cincinnati outslugged Philadelphia 4 to 2. Crutz and Donahue homered, Bressler also connected. American League action shows Boston defeating Chicago 6 to 4, Piercy and O Neill contributing. Detroit and Washington posted varied scores as Marberry and Zachary led Cleveland to an 11 to 4 win. Multiple games reflect strong offense and key homers across the circuit.
The rules committee met in executive session to decide if women should have equal representation on the national committee and in party affairs. Paul Howland of Cleveland was named chairman and Mrs. Nancy K. Long of Lancaster, Pa. was chosen secretary.
The twenty third annual summer session at the University of Kansas opens tomorrow at 8 am with registration in central administration and enrollment in Robinson Gymnasium. Classes begin Thursday at 7 30 am. A reception for summer students will be held Friday evening in Robinson Gymnasium with dancing later.
A tornado carved a path through Coffeyville Kansas damaging east and west areas with unroofed houses overturned garages and downed trees. A separate windstorm hit the east end destroying barns and a Montgomery County Fair Association stable housing two horses though none were harmed. a 12 year old boy, Jimmie Deshaver, suffered hand cuts from flying debris.
The Reuter Organ Co. has secured a large four manual organ contract for the University of Oregon at Eugene. The instrument will be installed in specially prepared chambers on a platform that can be lowered or raised to remain hidden when not in use. This marks the third organ the company has placed in Oregon.
Reports from the Christian and Missionary Alliance say conditions in Kwangsi province, China, are growing increasingly serious with at least one American missionary killed and several others in danger. Rev. Joseph R. Cunningham of Salem, Virginia, is confirmed killed.
Chancellor Lindley conferred degrees on 710 graduates at Memorial Stadium in a crowded 52nd annual commencement. Edwin E. Slosson warned of vanishing fossil fuels, urging focus on solar and wind energy and photosynthesis as Kansas power sources.
Chicago June 10 The house of delegates of the American medical association adopted a resolution calling for repeal of sections of the national prohibition act that interfere with the proper relation between physician and patient in prescribing alcohol medicinally.
Three Lawrence playgrounds Cordley South and Pinckney open tomorrow afternoon from 2 to 5 under Mrs Beatrice Johnk Cook supervision. All children invited to the opening and events include games folk dancing handwork and storytelling. Swimming classes for women girls and children will be arranged soon as part of the summer program sponsored by city civic clubs.
Tokio reports that government officials and business leaders see motives other than patriotism driving anti American sentiment after the US immigration law barring Japanese. They say Japanese business men seek to remove foreign competition in their markets and exploit the exclusion provision to that end.
Washington reports a placid White House with Calvin Coolidge carrying on at his desk despite Cleveland’s tumult. Bad weather kept handshakers from the Capitol, while Hoover at the Department of Commerce monitors Cleveland’s events. A Navy radio set transmits the UPI wire.
Contests from seven states and territories including Georgia Texas Tennessee Louisiana Mississippi District of Columbia and Porto Rico were reviewed by the credentials committee. McKinley of Illinois was named chairman with Wentworth of Florida as secretary. Many contestants will be heard and finish of deliberations was not expected until late tonight.
Sheriff Will Johns in Lawrence received word of a fatal shooting near Overbrook, Douglas County, where Frank Hardesty allegedly shot Henry Hupp after a dispute over a road ditch. Hardesty later surrendered in Overbrook. both men were farmers.
William Allen White recalls Republican conventions since 1896 calling a dull, emotionless gathering. He notes VP withdrawal triggers consternation and compares reporters sent to funerals, pallbearers, and unseen news to this amalgamated assembly. He predicts a winning ticket despite sub rosa, unimportant, and untrue news.
Five thousand dollars in prize money for the PGA tournament at French Lick September 14 to 21 was donated by Thomas D. Taggart. He also contributed $1,000 to the association benevolent fund. Notables like Gena Strazen Walter Hagen Jock Hutchinson Jim Barnes and others plan to play. The event will feature two qualifying tours with 64 players on the Indian course. Walter Hagen, once runner-up, and defending champ Gena Strazen are highlighted. A Morgan City bank incident reports a messenger claiming kidnaping and recovering $45,000 in negotiable bonds.
Washington reports crop conditions this year worse than any in twelve years. The Agriculture Department says conditions are serious in some states while the northern Rocky Mountain region and the Pacific coast face especially unfavorable outlooks. Bad weather reduced temperatures in corn belt states by 1 to 4 degrees below normal, making May the coldest in 30 years east of the Rockies.
