Remembered Mother Topeka Soldier Retrieves Narcissus
Topeka Kansas June 10. A narcissus bloom plucked by Lieut Clyde H Wasson for his mother is a Mother’s Day token. He crawled across No Man’s Land nearly to German trenches to obtain the flower, tearing his uniform and scratching his hand in the process. In a letter he sent home he described the risk and the flower’s beauty in the land of death. He also noted each company member was asked to write home on Mother’s Day despite censor responsibilities.
