Russians and Chechen forces clash in Argun amid amnesty
The eastern Chechen town of Argun saw renewed fighting on Saturday as Russian troops and Chechen police battled rebels for a second day. An amnesty offer approved by Russia's parliament allows rebels to surrender by Sept. 1 without prosecution. A Chechen commander Aud Yusupovy and three Russian servicemen, plus two civilians, were killed. 14 rebels died and 10 fled. Five people remained missing after heavy rains caused a 100-foot flood torrent and gas-line explosions.
