Los Angeles AP report says Bert and Marin Schillerstrom won a default judgment against Amtrak for 102 dollars paid for a Southwest Limited ticket from Fort Madison Iowa to Los Angeles. They alleged a drunk man occupied and evicted the woman from her seat, delaying travel and causing distress.

Haskell dean Burgess resigns for Inter America post

Swim Lesson Sign Up Sets Second Summer Session

Registration for the second of five summer swimming lessons will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Municipal Pool at Eighth and Kentucky. The session runs June 17 and June 21 24 with nine courses including Tots Parent Tots Beginners Advanced Beginners Intermediates Swimmers Diving and Water Safety and Adults. Classes are limited and taught by Red Cross certified instructors. Sponsored by the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department with a $3 registration fee. Correction clarifies Buzzi ties and committee post

The correction notes State Rep. Lloyd Buzzi a former and current Lawrence Association of Life Underwriters board member and states Rep. John Vogel, not Buzzi, is Douglas County representative on the House Ways and Means Committee. Five injured in downtown Chicago blasts raise alert

Five people were hurt in four explosions within 15 to 20 minutes late Monday night in downtown Chicago and near north shopping areas. The blasts used a high velocity explosive and occurred near the First National Bank of Chicago and Bank Leumi Le Israel, with one shattering windows at the John Hancock Center. Police reported no suspects or witnesses and all injuries were minor.

Lawrence Police Department adds new assistant chief from pool

The Lawrence Police Department may select a new assistant chief Friday from three finalists after narrowing more than 200 applicants. City Manager Buford Watson will interview the finalists with personnel director Brent McFall and a final decision is expected that day.
