Porter Says devotion Led to Lies in Watergate Testimony
Senatorial questioning revealed Herbert Porter confessed to perjury over funds used for dirty tricks. He cited deep devotion to Nixon and fear of not being a team player, saying his life is now devastated and he would not do it again.
Campaign Deputy Admits He Lied Dozens of Times
Herbert L Porter testified to the Senate Watergate committee that he and Jeb Magruder devised a false story about $100,000 paid to college students and that Porter lied to a grand jury and at the Watergate trial. He said the lie stopped after Magruder reported the president ordered truth telling. Porter admitted personal motives and planned deception to avoid embarrassment to Nixon. He said Liddy was identified in 1971 as in charge of dirty tricks and that $69,000 was paid in cash. Porter will return to the Senate hearing next Tuesday.
