The Liberty Memorial high school band directed by Oliver Hobbs presents the first of about 11 summer concerts tomorrow at 8 p m in South Park. The program features 90 players including junior high students, with student conductors and soloists. Eight shows will be in South Park and three at Woodland Park in North Lawrence. Guest conductors from K U summer school may appear. Tomorrow’s program includes Blue Bells over Twilight in the Mountains Twilight Hour Majorette overture His Honor and other works by Weber Yoder McNichol Myers and Olivadoti.
Kansas City June 7. Charles V. Carollo known as the alien big man of Kansas City gambling lost one round in a two part effort against deportation. He was convicted in circuit court last night of operating a gambling game a felony and sentenced to a year in jail. Federal officials call him an undesirable alien but deportation awaits two felony convictions. Carollo faces next week to trial on a federal mail fraud indictment and also faces perjury charges in naturalization. He is among Pendergast era figures who have fallen to the law in a political wave.
Plans to include canoe races in the Kaw River motorboat program on July Fourth depend on Phil Ernst Jr. meeting canoe owners Friday at 8 pm at the Chamber of Commerce. Fred Shimmins and Bud Andrews travel to Topeka to enlist motorboat owners for the event preceding the fireworks at K U stadium.
