Police investigate rape and other crimes in Lawrence
A 20 year old Missouri woman was taken to hospital after a reported rape in Lawrence. She declined charges but police continue to investigate and seek a 23 year old Lawrence man. Officers cite mutual acquaintance and ongoing inquiry into aggravated indecent liberties with a child from January 2000 and 2002 involving a 7 year old girl. Burglaries and thefts on West Sixth Street include a laptop worth 1600 dollars. Emergency calls yielded no fire incidents. The paper omits certain reports to protect victims and adheres to policy on naming arrestees and minor injuries.

Kansas boots up anti tobacco drive to keep minors safe
Kansas launches a new effort by the Department of Revenue and the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services to curb underage tobacco sales. The program costs over 412000 dollars through July 1 2008 and hires five agents plus a Denver firm to perform 5000 random store checks. Officials warn federal funding could be lost if compliance fails, and emphasize licensing penalties and retailer education.
