The national unemployment rate rose to 6.9 percent in May with 370,000 more workers on jobless rolls, a 0.3 point increase from April. Nonfarm payrolls gained 59,000, the first growth in nearly a year, while officials cautioned about mixed signals and noted signs the labor market may be stabilizing.
A national survey of 956 middle and high school students finds two thirds cannot reliably tell which beverages contain alcohol, and many cannot distinguish alcoholic coolers from flavored waters. The report notes widespread underage access, with 2/3 of drinkers able to buy alcohol, and calls for clearer labels and stronger enforcement.
Lawrence school board weighs closing Grant a small rural campus with 73 students citing higher per pupil costs and a $2.6 million state aid shortfall. Trustees consider savings of about $36 000 from Grant and 70 students at Kaw Valley as part of a $900 000 1991 92 spending trim while preserving district class sizes.
City and county officials met to discuss the Allen Realty properties on Massachusetts and New Hampshire streets. A $1.75 million price is considered reasonable, with calls for independent appraisal to establish fair market value before possible purchase.
