Truck Damage Near Williamstown Injures No One

Al Bell of Belvue escaping injury after his gas truck crashed into a bridge guardrail on Highway 24 two miles east of Williamstown. The truck suffered $850 in damage and the bridge $250. the tractor and trailer blocked the road and parts were left in the ditch.

Douglas County Democrats name 24 delegates for state convention

Twenty four Douglas County Democrats will attend the state Democratic convention in Salina on Sunday and Monday. The delegates were named at a Wednesday night meeting at the court house. The Douglas County Young Democrats elected officers with Lloyd Roberts as president and Truman Myers and Mrs Ralph Wolfson as vice presidents. Frances Christensen and George Chapman were chosen to represent the Young Democrats at Salina. Germans renew attack on Somme front near Soissons

Paris reports a violent German assault in the center of the Somme front north of Soissons in the Oise valley as Gen. Weygand defends key positions. The attack extends to the Aisne river northeast of Soissons with heavy artillery and tanks. French say many tanks, including hundreds claimed destroyed, but fighting continues from sea to the Aisne.

Prowler Disturbs Woman in Bedroom Reported

Mrs. Florence Svoboda of 933 Tennessee Street woke to a prowler pulling her bedclothes. She screamed and the intruder fled, with police unable to locate him. The call came in at 2 30 this morning.

Red Cross surpasses Douglas county goal doubling appeal

The Douglas county Red Cross exceeded its $2,440 goal by adding 166 to the 2,350 already received, bringing the total to 2,515, 75 over the quota. Judge Frank Gray, chapter chairman, said no order to close the fund was received and contributions may continue, with the latest receipts to be totaled and sent to St. Louis early next week.

Burke to Seek Democratic Governor Nomination in Kansas

Wichita has word that P W H Burke the internal revenue collector for Kansas said he has submitted his resignation to President Roosevelt and will become an active Democratic candidate for governor. Burke plans to file for the nomination once he confirms his resignation and reaches Topeka. He has a background as a Little River banker and stockman and previously served as vice chairman of the state board of administration in the Huxman administration.

The body of an unidentified woman was found today in the Missouri River at Leavenworth. Coroner Ted Sexton said it might be a victim of a flood earlier in the week in Nebraska.

Income Tax Exemptions Lowered To $2 000 and $800 in New Act

Washington reports a house tax subcommittee tentatively approved a tax bill to raise about 1.006 billion annually for defense. It lowers personal exemptions to 2000 for married and 800 for single filers, adds a 10 percent flat income tax, a 1 percent corporate tax rise, and higher surtaxes on incomes 6000 to 100000, with filing requirements for certain earners.
