German forces pour men and tanks into the Somme Aisne sector in a major offensive aimed at flanking the Weygand line. French and British air and ground units counter the blitz with heavy anti tank fire and fortification defense as the fight continues.
London reports describe 45 minutes of bombardment on Abbeville and three direct hits on a Somme estuary bridge. Britain announces high weekly bomber and engine output, a three mile curfew for ships, and a cautious plea for Americans to return home while the war nears end.
Berlin reports the Weygand line broken through on the entire front as German forces press along the coast toward Dieppe and Le Havre. The communique cites air force progress south of the Somme and the Aisne Oise canal, with raids on British bases and losses of 74 Allied planes to nine German.
Al Bell of Belvue escaping injury after his gas truck crashed into a bridge guardrail on Highway 24 two miles east of Williamstown. The truck suffered $850 in damage and the bridge $250. the tractor and trailer blocked the road and parts were left in the ditch.
Twenty four Douglas County Democrats will attend the state Democratic convention in Salina on Sunday and Monday. The delegates were named at a Wednesday night meeting at the court house. The Douglas County Young Democrats elected officers with Lloyd Roberts as president and Truman Myers and Mrs Ralph Wolfson as vice presidents. Frances Christensen and George Chapman were chosen to represent the Young Democrats at Salina. Paris reports a violent German assault in the center of the Somme front north of Soissons in the Oise valley as Gen. Weygand defends key positions. The attack extends to the Aisne river northeast of Soissons with heavy artillery and tanks. French say many tanks, including hundreds claimed destroyed, but fighting continues from sea to the Aisne.
Mrs. Florence Svoboda of 933 Tennessee Street woke to a prowler pulling her bedclothes. She screamed and the intruder fled, with police unable to locate him. The call came in at 2 30 this morning.
Topeka file shows M A Ben der Holton seeks Republican nomination for judge of the 86th district covering Jackson Jefferson and Potawatomi counties. A former district judge and former state senator he faces incumbent Lloyd Morris Os kaloosa in the race.
President Roosevelt asked Congress for power to dispose of surplus guns, ammunition, and warplanes to aid France and Britain. Navy turned back 50 planes to manufacturers, and debate arose in Congress over broader assistance and timing of further military support.
In Kansas City Kansas on June 7 Mrs. Marshall Becker Topeka the tourney medalist meets Mrs Kathrvr Black Pearson Wichita five time runner up in the 36 hole final. Becker beat Janis Gainey Manhattan 5 and 4 while Pearson eliminated Gale Brunkow Topeka 4 and 2. Becker shot 38 first nine three up on Gainey who posted 41. Pearson also had 38 first nine but was only one up on Becker ally with 39. Charles Newbold 1939 winner did not enter this year having moved from the state.
Reports in Mexico City say President Lazaro Cardenas will convene an extraordinary session to consider measures to control movements of foreigners regulate arms and strengthen the army and navy. A government source indicated possible defense pact talks with the United States for hemispheric security.
Heavy overnight rains across Kansas delivered over an inch in many areas with Pratt 3.00 inches and Garden City about 2.12. Wheat in southern counties faces potential damage from excess moisture, while corn and pastures gain. Weatherman Flora notes improving conditions west with more showers east and north.

Wichita has word that P W H Burke the internal revenue collector for Kansas said he has submitted his resignation to President Roosevelt and will become an active Democratic candidate for governor. Burke plans to file for the nomination once he confirms his resignation and reaches Topeka. He has a background as a Little River banker and stockman and previously served as vice chairman of the state board of administration in the Huxman administration.
The stock index covering 60 shares rose to 38.3 from 37.6 in yesterday's session. Investors faced mixed signals as several major names swung during the day.
Rome June 7 A shipping source said Rex would not sail for the United States despite reservations for June 12 while other Italian sailings were secretly cancelled. Reports claimed Italian freighters abroad were ordered back to Italian ports and relations with Soviet Russia might be improving. A Kaw Valley Growers pota to marketing campaign plan session occurred this afternoon at the Chamber of Commerce office. Emil Heck of Lawrence chaired the growers committee with Rolla Clymer, chairman of the industrial development commission, in attendance.
Unofficial reports claim General Maxime Weygand laid anti tank defense nests from the Somme Aisne front to the Seine above Paris. Roads are barricaded with machine gun posts and anti tank guns to halt Nazi motorized columns and potential parachutists, creating a dense defensive belt 45 to 55 miles inland.
City officials met with Milton R. McLean to outline a contract plan for leasing the Armory in Lawrence to the Kansas National Guard. F A Russell reported the committee aims to keep city control while allowing guard access for two drill nights weekly per company, with occupancy target around August 1 and projected rental near 1800 dollars annually.

They will compete in a state contest next fall for a shot at national Chicago competition. The body of an unidentified woman was found today in the Missouri River at Leavenworth. Coroner Ted Sexton said it might be a victim of a flood earlier in the week in Nebraska.
Washington reports a house tax subcommittee tentatively approved a tax bill to raise about 1.006 billion annually for defense. It lowers personal exemptions to 2000 for married and 800 for single filers, adds a 10 percent flat income tax, a 1 percent corporate tax rise, and higher surtaxes on incomes 6000 to 100000, with filing requirements for certain earners.
