Los Angeles June 7 Jean Harlow platinum blonde film actress died at 11 37 this morning at Good Samaritan hospital. She never regained consciousness after lapsing into a coma from uremic poisoning that spread to her brain. Doctors said death was due to complications from the poisoning. Attending her bedside were her mother Mrs Jean Belle and William Powell. Harlow’s dramatic life included multiple marriages and high profile associations with Charles McGrew Paul Bern Hal Rosson and Powell. Born Harlean Carpentier in Kansas City Kan March 3 1911 she rose to stardom after changing her name to Jean Harlow. Her studio had expected her back for a film within a week or ten days.

Topeka June 7 UPI Sales tax tickets set to yield the exact two percent on small sales may replace zinc tokens in some stores. Kansas tax commissioner Lester Luther said the plan targets ten cent stores and soda fountains with mostly small purchases. Merchants could sell a 10 cent ticket with 100 numbers, and for five cent sales a cashier would punch out one mill instead of a token. The plan is allowed since merchants are not required to use tokens, and any method must ensure the consumer pays tax within the commission’s bracket and never below two percent. Tokens on five cent sales would otherwise imply four percent tax under current brackets.
