Long term jobless face harsh odds in a tough economy
The Associated Press reports that after six months of unemployment, chances of reemployment shrink, with 46 percent of jobless Americans out six months or more. By late summer they may reach half of all jobless. Analysts cite eroding skills, fading contacts, and prolonged joblessness as drivers, while economists warn of extended benefits and a stubborn 9.7 percent unemployment rate. Jeff Martinez, a 40 year old Washington salesman, has logged over 200 interviews in three years, yet remains unemployed despite persistent effort.
