Kansas official cites evidence error in Belt rape case
KBI director calls the evidence mix up a temporary aberration linked to a second suspect as Belt faces no rape charges from that error. Attorney General Phill Kline ordered an outside audit of lab procedures and a review of current files to restore public trust while the lab prepares for reaccreditation. The Belt case ties to seven rapes alleged between 1989 and 1994 and a 1992 attack, with Belt already convicted on theft burglary and drug charges. The lab backlog and unfinished DNA processing remain sources of concern.
