ICC approves rail rate hike to offset rising costs
The Inter state Commerce Commission approved a 5 percent across the board rise in railroad freight rates to offset higher labor costs. The increase becomes effective no earlier than June 20 with no conditions, while a separate 2.5 percent hike may follow Oct. 1. The move reflects inflation pressures and railroads reporting a first quarter operating loss for Class 1 lines. Hugh C. Tosteson won the 48th National Spelling Bee for Puerto Rico’s San Juan Star, spelling incisor correctly and taking $1,000.
