Commission Evaluates Colleges Performance in New Report Card
The Carnegie Commission on Higher Education releases Purposes and Performance of Higher Education in the United States Approaching the Year 2000 evaluating five core functions. Ratings include superior for human capability and learning advancement, unsatisfactory but improving for educational justice, and uneven for societal critique. Recommendations call for more general education, work and service mixing, broader age-group interaction, steady basic research funding, and targeted support for low income and minority students. Authorities caution faculty that while criticism is allowed, it remains a public obligation shared by all citizens.
