Disaster Precision Pilot Killed at Transpo 72
Maj. Joe Howard of the Thunderbirds died in a fiery crash during a exit maneuver at Dulles Airport on the final day of Transpo 72. The 32 year old from Ahoskie North Carolina had flown 322 combat missions in Southeast Asia. Officials opened a board of inquiry as the exhibit drew over 1.4 million visitors despite criticism from Sen. Proxmire about the event’s cost.
