In Wasnixton on June 5 reports grow that no inquiry will be opened into charges that senators improperly speculated in sugar stock and that the sugar trust influenced tariff bill scheduling. The Tillman resolution, referred to the contingent expenses committee chaired by Senator Jones of Nevada, is expected to be reported backward. Also noted is a separate item from Raxans Crt Missouri about George Lee, wanted for tearing down a schoolhouse, resisting arrest, and a Kansas note on guns: the federal government demands army firearms from several institutions in Rock Island arsenals.
In Tongpo O June 5 Leglis C Barnes was found guilty of perjury. His father, a 1205 year old, staged a violent attack in court with a knife during and after the verdict. He was overpowered after a brutal struggle as onlookers suffered wounds. Barnes then attempted to rush a window. A separate report notes Sheriff McLain’s discreet arrival in Dayton and a violent incident in Kansas City where Tom Clark, an ex convict, shot multiple residents in a jealousy driven assault ending in serious injuries and a fire. A separate Arkansas woods tragedy reports Barrentine and Brown fatally wounding each other with axes. Kansas Endeavorers elect officers and a banner honor for a district delegation. Kansas bank reorganizations under a new law continue.
In New York on June 5 United States Commissioner Shircliffe held Richard M. Scruggs and K S Langhorne in the smuggling examination. Scruggs testified he bought jewelry in London for personal use or gifts and disputed a police claim about a missing item. Bonds were renewed as the defendants were sent to the grand jury. Separately Missouri Pacific and Rock Island railroads protested Kansas property assessments with hearings to follow.
StaTie Washington June 3 The fate of Bottcher Blackstone and Molinque two guides and Sunrise City Cock Inlet men lost crossing to Prince William Sound has been learned After marching from Sunrise in March they went ahead of guides reached a glacier fork misread the route and fell 500 feet to the beach below in a broken unsafe ice field.
A large front wall collapsed at the Beaton variety store between 7th and 8th streets, trapping up to three people. One rescuer was taken to emergency hospital with serious injuries. Rescue work continued as witnesses reported screams from beneath the rubble. A major city business is described as a leading store in the area.
