Wheat Surplus Dwindles Prompting Possible Rationing
Washington sources report U.S. farm officials fear a fast shrinking wheat surplus. The July 1 1961 reserve stood at 1.411 billion bushels and is projected to fall to 555 million by next July, below the safe emergency level by 45 million. A year ahead reserves could dip to 350 million, prompting Secretary Freeman to warn exports may be restricted to protect American supplies.
